Kindiki Discusses Kenya-Namibia Relations with President-Elect Nandi-Ndaitwah Following Diplomatic Visit

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki recently concluded a significant diplomatic visit to Namibia, where he held productive discussions with the country’s President-Elect, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral relations, especially in trade and economic development.

Kindiki’s visit, which began on February 28, 2025, was extended following his participation in the funeral of Namibia’s first President, Sam Nujoma, who passed away earlier in February 2025.

During his visit, Kindiki shared his insights on the potential for deepening economic ties between Kenya and Namibia.

He emphasized the opportunity for Kenya to export a variety of goods, including tea, coffee, horticultural produce, and skilled labor, while Namibia could serve as a key supplier of minerals, wines, and other beverages to Kenya.

Kindiki's comments reflected a shared goal to strengthen trade, encourage economic collaboration, and foster people-to-people connections between the two nations.

Kindiki’s delegation included Kenyan diplomats and political leaders, such as Michael Sialai, Kenya’s High Commissioner to Namibia, alongside Members of Parliament Eric Karemba (Runyenjes) and Fred Ikana (Shinyalu), and Senator Hillary Sigei (Bomet).

The Deputy President also shared that he had been sent to represent President William Ruto at the funeral of Namibia’s founding father, Sam Nujoma.

Nujoma’s death at 95 marked the end of an era for Namibia, as he was the key figure in the country's liberation struggle, leading the nation to independence in 1990.

The funeral, which took place on March 1, 2025, saw a large turnout of notable figures from across Africa, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, and former South African President Thabo Mbeki.

In his tribute, Namibia’s current President, Nangolo Mbumba, hailed Nujoma as a hero who played a central role in the fight against apartheid, ensuring Namibia’s independence and sovereignty.

Nujoma’s legacy as a leader who guided Namibia from a period of colonial oppression to a free and independent nation will remain a central part of the country’s history.

His funeral was held at Heroes’ Acre, a memorial dedicated to the revolutionaries who fought for Namibia’s freedom, where he was laid to rest.
