Uncertainty as Ex-County Officer Found Dead Shortly After Testifying in Sonko’s Trial

Newton Munene, a former member of the Nairobi County Information Communication Technology Executive Committee, has been found dead at his Karen home under mysterious circumstances, just weeks after testifying in a corruption case involving former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Announcing the news on Saturday, October 11, Sonko expressed shock over Munene’s sudden death, revealing that he passed away on the night of October 10, 2025. The cause of death had not been confirmed by the time of publication.

In a statement, Sonko claimed that powerful cartels could be behind the death, suggesting that it may be linked to Munene’s recent testimony as a defence witness in his ongoing corruption case.

“I have received the sad news of Mr. Newton Munene's passing with profound shock. He was a member of my Nairobi County Executive for the ICT sector,” Sonko stated.

He further noted that Munene’s death came barely a week after he testified in Sonko’s defence, insisting that those behind the act were trying to instill fear among witnesses.

“If my accusers possess any evidence linking me to acts of corruption, they should confront me in a court of law. I refuse to bow to threats, intimidation, and coercion while innocent individuals are murdered for exercising their constitutional right to defend me,” he added.

Sonko also claimed that several other former County Executive Committee Members who had volunteered to testify in his defence were being intimidated and warned against appearing in court.

“I have reliable information indicating that some former CECMs who served under my leadership and who have volunteered to be my defence witnesses are being threatened and intimidated not to come to court to testify. No level of intimidation or threats will deter me from seeking justice,” Sonko said.

Munene was among three key witnesses who had testified in Sonko’s defence at the Anti-Corruption Court in Nairobi.

His body was later moved to the Lee Funeral Home as investigations into his death began.
