Shock and grief have struck Sega town in Siaya County after a tragic electrocution claimed the life of teacher Meshack Ongulu inside a rental bathroom.
Initially, reports suggested that Meshack had died alongside a female colleague, but it has now emerged that she survived the incident.
According to witnesses, Modesta Mwakali was the first to come into contact with a live electrical fault in the bathroom. Meshack rushed to save her but was fatally electrocuted, turning a heroic act into a devastating tragedy.
Early misinformation about the woman’s death caused confusion and distress among family members and the community.
Residents noted that the two were together in the lodging room at the time of the accident and emphasized the close working relationship they shared. Friends, colleagues, and former students described Meshack as a devoted teacher and spiritual mentor.
He served as Director of Somabase Preparatory Centre and previously taught at St. Augustine’s Boys Boarding Butunyi, where he also worked as a chaplain.
Safety experts have warned about the dangers of faulty electrical installations, particularly in bathrooms, and urged homeowners to hire certified electricians and install protective devices such as circuit breakers.
While the shocking loss of Meshack has left Sega town mourning, the revelation that Modesta survived adds a surprising twist to an otherwise heartbreaking incident, offering a small measure of relief amid the tragedy.
