Sad as Shamba Boy Reveals Why Refusing to Buy Alcohol Lands Him 80 Years in Jail

A 27-year-old man from Laikipia, Wilson Wambugu, is serving an 80-year prison sentence that he insists is the result of false accusations stemming from a family dispute.

Speaking from prison, Wambugu said his troubles began after falling out with a relative who had employed him as a shamba boy in Nyeri.

According to Wambugu, the disagreement started over a minor issue involving alcohol. “He asked me to buy him drinks, but I told him I didn’t have the money,” he explained in an interview with Jamba TV’s Simon Kibe.

“I was earning KSh 6,000 a month, most of which went to my mother’s medication. I only had about KSh 1,000 left for myself.”

He claims that after refusing the request, the cousin threatened to “teach him a lesson,” and police officers allegedly arrived that same evening, arresting him on accusations of defiling three teenage girls.

Wambugu maintains his innocence, saying that the alleged victims even told authorities he had done nothing wrong.

“They said it was all lies, but still, I was convicted and given 80 years,” he lamented.

Now behind bars, Wambugu described the emotional toll of knowing he may spend the rest of his life in prison.

“It’s painful knowing I’ll be here until 2076. I’ll be 81 by then — if I even make it that far,” he said.

Despite his despair, Wambugu continues to hope that someone will hear his story and help him prove his innocence.

“I just want justice. I didn’t do it,” he insisted.
