On Tuesday, a section of Luo elders sent a strong warning to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, cautioning him that he is inviting trouble if he continues visiting the late Raila Odinga’s grave to pay his respects.
The elders said that while they appreciate Uhuru’s friendship with the Odinga family, some of his actions at the gravesite go against Luo cultural traditions.
In a statement made to the media, the elders revealed that on Monday evening, they received a disturbing report claiming that the former president had been seen at Raila’s grave doing something they described as “strange” and “spiritually dangerous.”
They said the act could bring bad luck not only to Odinga’s family but also to Uhuru himself.
According to the elders, Uhuru was seen kneeling at the gravesite as a sign of respect. They explained that in Luo culture, this is an act done only once during burial or the first visit.
Repeating it several times is considered disrespectful to the spirits of the dead. They warned that if Uhuru continues going back to Raila’s grave, the spirit of the late leader might not rest in peace, and Uhuru could begin to face challenges in his own life.
The elders further advised Uhuru Kenyatta to only visit Raila’s family home during times of grief or remembrance, but not the actual grave site.
“That place is sacred and should be reserved for family members only,” one elder said, stressing that outsiders should avoid repeated visits.
However, they also thanked the former president for standing with the Luo community during this difficult period.
They noted that they value his friendship and are even considering naming him as their spokesman and advisor as the country moves toward the next general election.
