A heated online debate has erupted after ODM-nominated Senator Hamida Kibwana defended Kibra MP Peter Orero, who was recently caught on video driving on the wrong side of the road — a clip that quickly went viral after being filmed by CNN Correspondent Larry Madowo.
The footage showed a tense exchange between the journalist and the legislator, whose driver allegedly hurled insults before dismissively telling Madowo to “take his complaints to President Ruto.”
While most Kenyans condemned the MP’s conduct, Senator Kibwana sparked outrage when she appeared to blame the incident on mental health struggles, suggesting that the pressures of political life could have influenced Orero’s behavior.
“Kenyans don’t understand how demanding political life can be — from constituency duties to parliamentary sessions and committee work. The constant pressure takes a toll on mental health,” she wrote on X.
“That’s why my Mental Health Bill seeks to establish a wellness desk to support leaders.”
Public Backlash: “Mental Health Doesn’t Justify Breaking the Law”
Her comments ignited a storm of criticism online, with many accusing the senator of using mental health as an excuse for impunity.
One user responded sharply:
“Doctors, nurses, and teachers face even more pressure — do we allow them to break traffic rules and endanger others? This is pure privilege, not pressure.”
Others echoed similar sentiments, noting that mental wellness should promote discipline, not defend misconduct.
“Having stress or burnout doesn’t justify unlawful behavior,” another Kenyan commented. “Leaders should model responsibility, not hide behind mental health whenever caught misbehaving.”
Other Leaders Weigh In
Interestingly, Senator Kibwana wasn’t the only one who defended the MP. Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai also stepped in, urging Kenyans to “understand the demanding life of politicians.”
“You people don’t know the crazy life of a politician, juggling between constituency matters, the assembly, and committees,” Alai said.
“Before rushing to judgment, try understanding the pressure they face daily.”
The Viral Confrontation
The viral video that sparked the uproar was captured on Thursday, showing MP Orero clashing with Larry Madowo after being caught driving on the wrong lane. The MP reportedly insulted the journalist and dismissively told him to report the matter to President William Ruto.
Only later did Madowo realize the vehicle occupants were a Kenyan MP and his driver — both unapologetic even after being called out.
