Morning Horror in Liboi as Six GSU Officers Killed After Patrol Truck Hits Deadly Landmine Near Somali Border

Tension and grief have engulfed Garissa County after six General Service Unit (GSU) officers were killed in a suspected Al-Shabaab attack along the volatile Kenya–Somalia border.

According to reports, the officers were on routine patrol when their truck hit a deadly Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near Liboi area early Wednesday morning. The blast was so powerful that it completely wrecked the vehicle, killing six officers on the spot.

Garissa County Commissioner Joshua Chepchieng confirmed the tragic incident, noting that one officer was critically injured while two others were in stable condition. The injured were airlifted to Nairobi for specialized medical attention.

Dadaab Deputy County Commissioner Harun Kamau described the incident as “a heartbreaking loss,” confirming that the officers were heading toward Liboi when the explosion occurred. “Unfortunately, we lost six officers while three others have been injured,” he said.

Security sources revealed that the explosive was likely planted by Al-Shabaab militants who continue to target security convoys and installations along the border.

Following the attack, a multi-agency security team comprising GSU and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel was immediately deployed to the area to pursue the attackers and secure the border zone.

The GSU and KDF have been conducting joint operations in the region to suppress cross-border militant activities and restore normalcy in affected areas.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as investigations and manhunts intensify.
