Govt Declares Friday a Public Holiday to Honour Raila Odinga

The government has officially declared Friday, October 17, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday in India.

According to a gazette notice issued by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday morning, the decision was made under Section 3 of the Holidays Act to allow Kenyans to mourn and celebrate the life of one of the country’s most influential leaders.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, October 17, 2025, shall be a public holiday in honour of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga,” read part of the gazette notice.

Raila, 80, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, at a private hospital in Koothattukulam, Kerala State, India, where he had been undergoing treatment.

Following the announcement, President William Ruto declared seven days of national mourning, with flags ordered to fly at half-mast across the country.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki revealed that it was Raila Odinga’s personal wish to be buried within 72 hours of his death, a request that has been respected by the government and his family.

As outlined in the official farewell programme, Raila will be accorded a state funeral on Friday, October 17, at Nyayo Stadium, where leaders and dignitaries from around the world are expected to gather to pay their final respects.

Raila’s body is scheduled to arrive in Kenya on Friday morning, with President William Ruto and close family members set to receive it at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at around 9:30 a.m.
