Speaking on Tuesday, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja made a strong statement about his role as the police boss.
He said there are certain orders he can obey, but there are others that go against his values and cannot be followed.
In his remarks, IG Kanja revealed that President William Ruto has been pressuring him to take actions that he believes are wrong and unfair.
According to him, as a police officer, his duty is to protect the law and the people of Kenya, not to please anyone, even the president.
He went on to explain that President William Ruto is ordering him to be lenient on some politicians who, in his view, are spreading hate, promoting tribalism, and causing division in the country.
“These leaders are not building the nation; they are destroying the unity we have worked hard for,” IG Kanja reportedly said.
The police chief added that he would rather step down from his position than allow politics to control his office.
“I would rather resign as the Inspector General than watch a few leaders cause chaos while we keep quiet,” he stated firmly.
Kanja also urged President Ruto not to sympathize with such politicians, saying that anyone who insults others or promotes hatred should face the law.
He concluded by reminding all leaders that no one is above the law and that Kenya’s peace must always come first.
