Chaos at JKIA: What Forced Authorities to Shut Down Airport Moments After Raila’s Body Arrived

The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was temporarily shut down on Thursday after thousands of mourners flooded the facility to receive the body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In a statement, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that operations at the airport were suspended following a sudden security situation that arose as crowds overwhelmed the restricted sections of the airport.

“The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority informs the public that operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport have been suspended due to a security situation following the arrival of the remains of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya,” part of the statement read.

According to KCAA, thousands of Raila’s supporters gained unauthorized access to areas meant for airport staff and security teams, forcing law enforcement officers to step in and restore order.

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) convoy escorting the body was delayed for several hours before leaving the airport.

Raila’s remains were initially set to be transported to the Lee Funeral Home before being moved to Parliament Buildings for public viewing.

However, organizers later announced a change in venue after massive crowds gathered outside Parliament, blocking major roads and creating traffic gridlocks.

The public viewing was consequently moved to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, to accommodate the large number of mourners.

“Due to the surge in the number of mourners, the viewing of the body of H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga has been moved from Parliament Buildings to Kasarani Stadium,” the ODM Party said in a statement.

Members of the public have been urged to remain calm and avoid the airport area until operations fully resume.

KCAA apologized for the inconvenience caused and appealed for cooperation as the country observes a period of national mourning.

Raila’s body arrived in Kenya on Thursday morning aboard a military aircraft and was received by President William Ruto, senior government officials, and family members — marking the start of an emotional farewell for one of Kenya’s most iconic leaders.
