Rarieda MP and ODM Vice Chairperson Otiende Amollo has cautioned his party against being swallowed by President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
His remarks come just days after President Ruto assured mourners during Raila Odinga’s burial that he would “guide and protect” the Orange party as the country heads toward the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an interview on Spice FM, Amollo noted that while ODM remains part of the broad-based government born from the Ruto-Raila agreement, the party should never lose its independence.

He insisted that ODM’s strength lies in maintaining its identity and ideology, even as it cooperates with the ruling coalition.
According to Amollo, ODM should pursue a new and structured working agreement with UDA instead of merging.

“ODM must not be absorbed by UDA. If we merge, it will mean the death of multiparty democracy. We can only work together through a clear, negotiated understanding,” he said.
He further dismissed claims that President Ruto had become ODM’s unofficial leader following Raila’s death, emphasizing that the party’s leadership must remain internal and guided by its constitution.

“The President cannot be the spokesperson of ODM. For ODM to stay strong, it must operate independently,” Amollo said.
Amollo added that if President Ruto hopes to continue ODM’s support in 2027, there must be fresh talks that clearly define what both sides have achieved and what new goals they intend to pursue together.

“We need to sit down again, outline our progress so far, and agree on what we want to achieve. That can only happen if ODM remains strong and not absorbed,” he explained.
He also advised the President to avoid interfering in ODM’s internal affairs, saying that mutual respect between parties is the key to a stable partnership.
Addressing the question of who will succeed Raila Odinga as Luo Nyanza’s political kingpin, Amollo said leadership will emerge naturally and should not be rushed.

He also expressed confidence that the Ruto-Raila political pact remains solid, revealing that the joint committee formed by the two leaders to oversee the ten-point agreement is still operational and making progress.
