A dark cloud hangs over Migaa area in Molo after 14 people lost their lives in a horrific road accident along the Nakuru–Eldoret highway in the early hours of Friday morning.
The crash, which occurred around 3 am, involved a Kitale Shuttle matatu and a trailer. Police confirmed that all passengers aboard the matatu perished instantly, while the trailer’s driver and his turnboy were also killed.
According to police spokesman Michael Muchiri, preliminary reports indicate the lorry driver lost control, ramming into the matatu before dragging it for several meters, fatally trapping the victims inside. The dead included nine men, four women, and a child.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene but found no survivors. The bodies were later taken to nearby mortuaries for postmortem examinations as investigations continue.
Authorities described Migaa as a notorious black spot and urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving through the stretch.
“We are stepping up awareness campaigns because this is a dangerous section of the road,” Muchiri said.
The accident adds to Kenya’s alarming road safety statistics. Police records show 4,282 people were killed in road crashes between January and November 2024, a sharp rise from 3,901 deaths recorded in the same period of 2023.
Thousands of others were injured, leaving families devastated by loss and long-term trauma.
