ODM Pushes Back Grand 20th Anniversary Event — Here’s Why Mombasa Will Wait

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has announced a major change of plans, postponing its highly anticipated 20th anniversary main event in Mombasa.

Originally slated for October 10–12, the three-day celebration will now run from November 14–16. The decision was reached after a consultative meeting with party leader Raila Odinga and the ODM@20 Planning Committee chaired by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.

According to Mohamed, the shift was prompted by mounting calls from regions that have yet to host anniversary activities.

“We highlighted the ongoing demands from counties we haven’t visited. Many supporters wanted to be part of this historic celebration but couldn’t travel to Mombasa,” he explained.

So far, ODM@20 activities have taken place in Busia, Wajir, Kisii, and Narok. The extended program will now allow the party to tour more counties before the grand finale on the Coast.

The updated schedule includes:

October 9–10: ODM@20 Soccer Tournament

October 15: Kajiado County forum

October 26: Turkana County engagement

November 2: Kilifi County (Magarini) activities

November 9: Nairobi County celebrations

ODM confirmed that the Mombasa climax will still feature summits, a youth concert, and a four-team football showdown with Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Bandari FC, and Shabana FC.

Founded in 2005 during the heated Constitution referendum, ODM grew from the "Orange Movement" — a name inspired by the ballot symbol where orange stood for "No" and banana for "Yes." Two decades later, the party is using the anniversary to reflect on its journey and showcase its future.

For now, supporters will have to wait a little longer before the seaside celebrations light up Mombasa.
