Tension has gripped the Maasai Mara after six lions from the same pride were found showing signs of poisoning at the Oleisukut Conservancy.

The discovery comes barely two days after Kenyans enjoyed free access to national parks to mark World Tourism Day.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), veterinary experts rushed to the scene after the pride was spotted staggering and unusually drowsy.

Emergency treatment was administered, saving all six lions. Four have since regained full strength, while two remain under close watch.

“Thankfully, all six survived. Our veterinary team acted swiftly to stabilise them and relocate the pride to safety,” KWS said in a statement, reaffirming its commitment to protecting Kenya’s iconic wildlife.

The cause of the poisoning remains unclear, with investigations already underway to uncover how the pride came into contact with toxic substances.

This scare follows another recent incident in August, when tourists disrupted the world-famous wildebeest migration by leaving their safari vans to take photos, sparking public outrage.

Wildlife officials have since vowed to tighten regulations and prevent further threats to animals in the Mara.
