The highly anticipated National Police Service (NPS) recruitment exercise, which was set to kick off on Friday, October 3, has been suspended indefinitely following a court order.
In a statement issued Thursday evening, NPS confirmed that the process had been halted after the Employment and Labour Relations Court granted interim orders in response to a petition filed earlier in the week.
The orders were issued by Lady Justice Hellen Wasilwa in Petition No. E196 of 2025 (Harun Mwau v. Inspector General of Police, the National Police Service Commission & Others).
Justice Wasilwa directed the respondents—including the Inspector General and the National Police Service Commission—to file their responses within seven days. The petitioner will also be allowed equal time to submit further affidavits and written submissions.
“The police recruitment exercise scheduled to commence on October 3, 2025, has been postponed until further notice,” NPS stated, adding that the commission was working with legal teams to resolve the matter.
The suspended exercise was meant to recruit 10,000 new officers, running from October 3 to 9 across all counties.
Just a day before the suspension, the Inspector General, Douglas Kanja, had assured Kenyans during a joint briefing at the National Police College Embakasi ‘A’ Campus that the recruitment would be credible and transparent.
NPS has yet to announce a new date, leaving thousands of hopeful applicants uncertain about the fate of the process.
