Two People Taken to Court for Interfering With Police CCTV

Two people have been taken to Kibera Law Courts because they are suspected of interfering with CCTV footage at Central Police Station. This footage is important in the investigation into the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang, who allegedly died while in police custody.

One of the suspects is a technician. He told police that he was paid Sh3,000 to help delete or change the CCTV recordings.

Police say they arrested the technician at his home in Saika on Friday. He admitted that a female client had hired him in 2024 to install CCTV cameras at the station. He installed 25 cameras, including in the report office, corridors, both floors, and the parking area.

On June 8, 2025, at around 6:22 am, the technician said a police officer called him and told him to come to the station. When he got there, he was taken to an office where the CCTV recorder (DVR) was kept. The officer asked him to delete footage from June 6 and 7.

The technician explained that he couldn’t delete just two days — the only way to erase footage was to format the whole system, which would delete everything. He said he didn’t delete anything but was still paid Sh3,000.

The next day, on June 9, the same officer asked him to come again with a new hard drive to replace the old one. The technician said he couldn’t buy one that early because shops were still closed. When he got to the station, he found the DVR had already been opened.

Later, the officer told him his phone number had been given to an IPOA officer who needed help getting back the deleted footage. The technician said he was busy and didn’t want to get involved because he had seen reports online about someone dying at the station. He then sent someone else to help instead.

Police say they are still looking for at least three other suspects, some of whom are believed to be hiding. So far, 23 people — including 17 police officers — have already recorded statements. Officers from DCI and IPOA are working together on the investigation.
