On Monday, it was reported that Kenyans have officially withdrawn their trust from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), and the National Police Service (NPS). This comes after growing complaints that the justice system is being misused and not followed according to the law.
Former Chief Justice David Maraga has now stepped in and called for serious action. In a statement he made, Maraga said the government must start fixing the justice system by arresting DCI boss Mohamed Amin, Inspector General of Police Dauglas Kanja, and Deputy Inspector General Lagat. He said this is the only way to rebuild public trust.
“If these people are not arrested, then justice is only a word in this country,” Maraga warned.
Maraga also gave a deadline. He said if no action is taken by June 25, he will join hands with Kenyans and begin legal action against the three officers.
“We cannot continue pretending that all is well. If nothing happens by June 25, we will start the next steps,” he said.
He further questioned why DIG Lagat, who has been linked to the murder of blogger Albert Ojwang, is still working in office instead of being investigated.
“How can someone named as a suspect still hold office?” Maraga asked.
