Deputy Police Boss Lagat Steps Down as Probe Into Ojwang’s Death Continues

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has decided to step down from his position as investigations continue into the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang.

Ojwang died while being held at the Central Police Station in Nairobi, and many people have been demanding answers. On Monday, Lagat released a statement saying he is stepping aside so that the investigations can go on without interference. He said it was a personal and moral decision.

“In respect of my role and what is happening around the death of Albert Ojwang, I have decided to step aside until investigations are over. My deputy will handle my duties during this time,” Lagat said.

Lagat, who became Deputy IG in 2024 after taking over from Kanja (who was promoted to Inspector General), said he is ready to help with the investigation in any way he can. He also sent his condolences to Ojwang’s family.

This step follows growing pressure from human rights groups, civil society, and some Members of Parliament who are calling for justice and more transparency. In the past week, people across the country have held protests, asking for accountability and a shake-up in police leadership.
