Criticism towards police officers in Kenya continues to grow after a shocking case involving a pregnant woman. The woman was reportedly arrested on Wednesday evening in Nyeri county and later tortured while in police custody. This incident has sparked anger and calls for justice from members of the public.
According to Mariam Mutembi, the sister of the victim, DCI officers came and took her sister by force over what she described as a very small issue that did not deserve an arrest.
“They took her like a criminal yet what she was accused of was something very minor. They didn’t even explain anything,” Mariam said.
Mariam added that things got worse when her sister reached the police station. She claims that while in the cell, the police officers tortured her sister, who was already pregnant. Sadly, this led to her losing the pregnancy.
“She was bleeding and crying for help. Now, she is in a coma and fighting for her life in the hospital,” she painfully shared.
She went on to send a strong message to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), urging them to take action and make sure the officers involved are punished.
“How long will this go on? How many more people must suffer before something is done? IPOA must act,” Mariam demanded.
