Many government offices in Kenya are in a hurry to change their vehicle number plates before the August 29 deadline.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) says it is getting many applications for the new high-tech number plates. These plates are more secure and can be tracked easily. They were introduced in 2022 to help reduce crime, stop car theft, and improve road safety.
On May 21, 2025, the Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, sent a notice to all government departments. He told them to make sure their vehicles have the new number plates by August 29. He warned that any government car without the new plates by then will be taken off the road.
NTSA says it has put good systems in place to handle the high number of applications and help the process go smoothly. The new number plates include a chip that stores important information about each vehicle. This will help Kenya meet international safety standards.
The order applies to all government offices, public schools, colleges, universities, and county governments. So far, many have not yet changed their plates, even though it is a serious security matter. The government wants full compliance to help stop crimes like abductions that often involve cars with fake or hidden plates.
