In a stunning twist that’s shaking the country, a Nakuru-based police constable is set to face murder charges after allegedly gunning down a protester during a chaotic crackdown earlier this month.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has confirmed that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) wants the officer tried for the brutal killing of 29-year-old Daniel Nderitu Maina, who was shot dead during a protest in Nakuru’s London Estate on June 9.
Sources say the officer, now in custody following a court order, was among 10 cops from the Nakuru Central Police Station deployed that day—but only one pulled the trigger.
The fateful day began when officers stormed the area reportedly hunting down a suspected bhang dealer. However, things took a deadly turn when the protest spiraled out of control and one officer fired live bullets, killing Maina instantly.
The incident exploded into a violent showdown. Furious residents took over the streets, barricading the Nakuru-Kampi ya Moto Road and battling police for over an hour. Eyewitnesses claim the protest wasn’t even about drugs—but about a failed bribery deal gone wrong, sparking allegations of cold-blooded execution by police.
Things grew even more intense when residents stormed the Nakuru Level Five Hospital, where Maina’s body was being held, demanding justice. Local leaders stepped in, but the community refused to be silenced.
Nakuru West MP Samuel Arama has added fuel to the fire, questioning why officers from another sub-county—Nakuru East—were operating in his constituency. “Why are undercover cops from outside roaming our streets, claiming to fight drugs but ending up killing our youth?” he posed angrily.
Meanwhile, in a related bombshell, OCS Samson Talaam and three other officers remain behind bars in another murder case, this time involving a suspect who died in police custody—deepening public outrage over a series of deaths linked to rogue officers.
This latest development sends a chilling message to law enforcement: no more hiding behind the uniform.
