In a statement made on Monday afternoon, Justin Muturi strongly criticized the decision to suspend police officers who were on duty when Albert Ojwang died in custody at Central Police Station.
Muturi said the officers should not have been suspended but arrested instead, so they can explain what really happened to Ojwang.
“You don’t suspend people when a life has been lost in custody. You arrest them and let them explain how the suspect died,” Muturi said.
Muturi added that Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and his Deputy Lagat should resign without delay. He said the action of suspending the officers instead of taking strong steps was not acceptable.
“If this is the kind of leadership we are getting from the top police bosses, then they have no business being in office. They must resign immediately,” he said.
He also condemned the police for saying that Albert Ojwang injured himself while in custody. Muturi said that claim does not make any sense and looks like a way to escape responsibility.
“How can someone harm himself under full police watch? That is a careless and unbelievable explanation,” he said.
Muturi finished by saying that young people should not be silenced for speaking the truth. He said the era of police brutality must end.
“We will not allow the youth to be killed or tortured just because they are bold enough to speak the truth. This madness must stop now,” Muturi declared.
