A group of senators visiting Kisii County to check how public money is being used were reportedly attacked on Monday.
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka says the attack happened during an official oversight visit and blames Governor Simba Arati for organizing the violence. The senators are part of a committee that audits county finances, and they had raised concerns about problems in Kisii’s financial records.
According to Senator Onyonka, the team had gone to the county assembly to dig deeper into suspicious spending, but things turned ugly when they were allegedly met by rowdy groups loyal to the governor.
“The governor sent his people to attack those he thinks support me,” Onyonka said. He urged the governor to use proper legal methods to defend himself instead of using violence, saying the attack showed poor leadership.
Despite the chaos, Onyonka insisted that the Senate will continue its work to make sure public funds are used properly—not just in Kisii, but across the country.
He added, “The governor thinks violence will scare us off, but we’re not afraid. We’re here to hold leaders accountable.”
This incident comes just weeks after Deputy President Kithure Kindiki condemned the use of violence in politics. He had spoken out after goons tried to interrupt the launch of former DP Rigathi Gachagua’s political party.
Kindiki emphasized that violence and insults only damage Kenya’s democracy. He called for peaceful, respectful politics focused on real issues—not personal attacks or fights.
