The Kenya Kwanza government has started punishing some leaders from the opposition who took part and supported the June 25 protests across the country.
On social media, former Chief Justice David Maraga said that the government has withdrawn his security detail. Maraga strongly condemned the move, saying it was wrong for the government to target him.
“It is very unfortunate that I’m being punished simply because I supported the peaceful protests,” Maraga said.
In his full statement, Maraga said it is sad to see the government using intimidation against leaders who are standing with the people. He explained that he joined the Gen Zs on the streets peacefully and did not break any law.
“Supporting the people and the Constitution should not be seen as a crime,” he added.
Maraga further said that he will not be scared or silenced by anyone. He promised to continue standing firm with the youth and supporting their peaceful demonstrations.
“I will not be intimidated. I acted within the law, and I will always support what is right,” he declared.
Also on Thursday, Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino revealed that his security has also been withdrawn. Babu, who joined the protests with Gen Zs, criticized the government’s action, saying he will not stop supporting the youth.
“We shall not be shaken. I will continue standing with Gen Z,” Babu said.
Both David Maraga and Babu Owino were physically seen marching with Gen Z on June 25. Many now believe that the government is punishing them for participating by removing their official security protection.
