Tragedy struck along the Garissa Highway on Sunday evening after a police vehicle overturned, killing four officers on the spot and leaving two others critically injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the police vehicle was speeding when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the car to roll multiple times. The six officers were heading along the highway when the incident occurred.
The two survivors were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, while the bodies of their fallen colleagues were taken to the mortuary. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
The National Police Service has not yet issued an official statement on the incident, which adds to a string of fatal crashes involving officers this month.
In a separate incident on the same day, a bus carrying students from Friends Bukembe High School was involved in an accident at the notorious Kona Mbaya black spot near Chesikaki Police Station in Bungoma County. The students were returning from a county music festival at Cheptais Boys High School.
Thankfully, no fatalities were reported, though several students sustained injuries and were taken to Sirisia Sub-county Hospital for treatment. School officials confirmed all affected students were receiving medical attention and that their parents had been informed.
Authorities are now investigating both incidents as concerns grow over rising road accidents, particularly those involving police and school vehicles. Just earlier this month, separate crashes claimed the lives of other officers — including two killed in Bungoma on June 3 and one among three victims in a Kisii-Migori highway collision on June 15.
