Tension has gripped Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) after chaos erupted when a group of mourners turned violent following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
According to reports and footage shared online, several individuals were seen breaking into shops, stealing goods, and destroying property while pretending to join other mourners.
Witnesses said the incident caused panic among business owners and commuters in the city center.
Police officers were deployed to restore order as traders rushed to close their businesses to avoid losses. Some residents expressed concern that the unrest could spread to other towns as Kenyans continue to mourn the former Prime Minister.
In Kisumu and Kibera, similar scenes were reported as thousands of mourners poured into the streets, chanting Raila’s name and waving green leaves in his honour.
Businesses were forced to shut down as emotional supporters gathered to pay tribute to the ODM leader.
President William Ruto has since declared seven days of national mourning, describing Raila as a statesman who dedicated his life to democracy, peace, and unity in Kenya.
