The heart-wrenching convoy carrying former Prime Minister Raila Odinga arrived at Nyayo National Stadium for his state funeral, leaving Nairobi residents in stunned grief.
The hearse, moving slowly through Uhuru Highway at 9:46 a.m., was flanked by military pallbearers, uniformed officers, and close family members.
Mourners along the route erupted in cries, while others waved flags, twigs, and portraits of the late leader.
The procession had commenced shortly after 9:20 a.m., with the flag-draped casket solemnly exiting Parliament Buildings.
A ceremonial guard of honor lined the streets, paying tribute as Kenyans expressed their sorrow through tears, chants, and songs celebrating Raila’s decades-long fight for democracy.
At Nyayo Stadium, thousands had gathered, including regional leaders, foreign dignitaries, and ordinary Kenyans.
President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki were present, joining Raila’s family—Ruth Odinga, Winnie Odinga, Mama Ida, Rosemary Odinga, and long-time aide Maurice Ogeta—in paying respects.
Foreign leaders from across Africa also attended, reflecting the late statesman’s wide-reaching influence.
The ceremony featured prayers, musical tributes, and military honors, honoring Raila’s political legacy and lifelong dedication to justice and reform.
Choirs and cultural groups performed, blending mourning with reflection and symbolizing unity amid Kenya’s political divisions.
Security across the capital was tightened, with KDF, National Police Service, and NYS personnel stationed at key intersections.
Access to the stadium was strictly controlled, and attendees passed through multiple checkpoints.
Following the service, Raila’s body will be taken to his Karen residence overnight before being flown to Kisumu on Saturday morning.
On Sunday, he will be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County, in accordance with his wish to be buried within 72 hours of his passing.
As the nation continues to mourn, one devotee reflected, “Raila may have left us, but his spirit will forever march on with Kenya.”
