Shock as KANU Youth Slams Gideon Moi, Rejects Ruto’s Broad-Based Government Deal

The Kenya African National Union (KANU) Youth Congress has officially distanced itself from the recent partnership between President William Ruto and KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, calling the move inconsistent with the party’s core values.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 14, the youth wing said:

"We, the KANU Youth Congress, fully dissociate from the newfound partnership between our National Chairman, Hon. Gideon Kispsielei Towett Moi, and H.E. President William Ruto. Our values as the youth and the party at large are founded on accountability, transparency, respect for human rights, and the promotion of the rule of law."

The youth leaders stressed that no coalition or partnership could justify actions they perceive as human rights violations, forced disappearances, and disregard for the rule of law.

"Solely consolidating the political class under the umbrella of 'broad-based government' is not only a fallacy but also the kicks of a dying horse," the statement read.

"We need a functioning system, social services revived, fair employment opportunities for the youth, and industrialisation prioritised over taxation."

The statement comes just four days after President Ruto announced KANU’s entry into the broad-based government, a move aimed at uniting political rivals and advancing Kenya’s founding vision. During a visit to Baringo County on October 10, Ruto said:

"I reached out to my brother so that we can help move the country forward. If there is any problem anywhere, do not blame Moi, you can blame me."

Despite the union with the government, Gideon Moi also abandoned his bid to regain his former seat in the upcoming by-elections, supporting the UDA candidate instead.

KANU Youth insist that the government should focus on pressing national issues, including the health sector crisis, improving education accessibility, and upholding constitutional governance, rather than political alliances that do not benefit ordinary Kenyans.
