According to reports from local media in Kerala, the longtime opposition leader collapsed during his usual morning walk within the compound of Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre, where he had been receiving care.
Witnesses said doctors on site acted quickly before transferring him to a nearby private hospital in Koothattukulam, a small town in southern India.
Despite several attempts to revive him, doctors pronounced him dead at about 9:53 a.m. Indian time, which was 7:23 a.m. in Nairobi.
The hospital’s management later confirmed the news in a short statement, explaining that Odinga arrived unresponsive and could not be stabilized despite “all available emergency efforts.”
Sources in India say the veteran politician was accompanied by his daughter and close family members, together with his personal doctor.
His body has since been placed at the same medical facility as officials from the Kenyan Embassy in New Delhi and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs prepare formal arrangements.
