Former President Uhuru Kenyatta delivered a moving eulogy at Raila Odinga’s state funeral at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday, October 17, describing the late leader as a beacon of peace, democracy, and human rights in Kenya.
Speaking to thousands of mourners, Uhuru emphasized that Kenya’s history would be incomplete without Raila at the forefront.
“Our history in this country is not complete without Raila as number one. Let us maintain his ideals for eternity,” he urged.
Uhuru praised Raila for transcending tribal divisions, noting his deep connections with people across the nation.
“Raila Odinga was never tribal; he loved all Kenyans equally. He valued you for your thoughts and words, not the color of your skin. Though he has left us in body, in spirit and in the spirit of Kenya, he will live on for years to come.”
He also offered condolences to Raila’s family, led by Mama Ida Odinga and their children Rosemary, Raila Junior, and Winnie, pledging to support them in the late leader’s absence.
In a lighter moment, Uhuru reminisced about the casual times he shared with Raila, including reflections on their forefathers while enjoying “a small something” — porridge and tea.
“We would talk about our fathers who had passed away, wondering if they were watching us. Now I know you are with them, talking to our old men,” he said.
Referring to their close bond, forged even amid Kenya’s contentious 2017 elections, Uhuru noted their famous handshake and the way they often called each other “my brother,” highlighting a friendship that transcended politics.
“Now, my friend, you have gone ahead. I know you are showing the way up there. Not that I’m in a rush, I still want to rest a bit,” he added, bringing both tears and smiles to the congregation.
