Mystery Surrounds Kenyan Woman’s Death in Saudi Arabia as Family Struggles to Raise Ksh.1.3M

A family in Shamakhokho ward, Vihiga County, has been thrown into agony after learning of the sudden death of their daughter in Saudi Arabia.

The deceased, 28-year-old Elizabeth Cheusi, had traveled abroad two years ago hoping to provide a better life for her two children back home.

According to her grandmother, Agnes M’maitsi, the young woman went through training in Nairobi before leaving the country with other job seekers.

“We kept in touch until last week when I received a phone call telling me that my granddaughter was no more. I have never even been to Nairobi, let alone Saudi Arabia, yet I am told Ksh.1.3 million is needed to bring her body back,” Agnes said tearfully.

What was once a hopeful journey has now turned into despair. The family, which lives in modest means, says the cost of repatriation has left them confused and helpless.

Elizabeth’s sister, Diana Lugonga, revealed that they only confirmed her death through posts on social media after the agent who had facilitated her travel denied ever knowing her.

“When I asked, he brushed me off and claimed she was no longer under his agency at the time of her death,” she explained.

Neighbours have since been gathering at the family’s home daily, consoling them as they appeal to government officials and well-wishers for support to give Elizabeth a dignified burial.

For now, the grieving family remains in limbo—caught between sorrow and the heavy burden of raising the huge amount required to bring their loved one home.
