Drama has rocked Kericho County after four Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) were slapped with suspensions over shocking footage linking them to violent acts at Governor Eric Mutai’s office.

According to reports, CCTV cameras captured the four leaders hurling stones and vandalising property during the heated events of August 15, a day marked by tensions surrounding the governor’s impeachment process.

Those suspended include Kapsaos MCA Paul Bii and nominated MCAs Irene Chebet, Noela Opile, and Fancy Korir. The footage is said to show them not only damaging the governor’s office—just a short distance from the assembly chambers—but also smashing windows and destroying property belonging to the County Assembly itself.

Kericho County Assembly Majority Leader Philip Rono confirmed the disciplinary action, stating that the leaders’ conduct was unacceptable and tarnished the image of the assembly.

“Four members have been suspended for 90 days. They will not take part in assembly proceedings or carry out official duties. Some have also been ordered to apologise before the Committee on Powers and Privileges,” Rono announced.

Political Tensions Behind the Chaos

The violent scenes came amid a political storm after Governor Mutai faced an impeachment motion on August 6, 2025. He was accused of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violating the Constitution.

While the county assembly overwhelmingly backed the motion, the matter escalated to the Senate, setting the stage for a tense showdown. But in a dramatic turn on August 29, the Senate voted to save Mutai, with 25 senators rejecting his impeachment, ruling that the evidence provided did not meet the required threshold.
