Impeachment & Expulsion: What Lies Ahead for Governor Kahiga After His Controversial Remarks on Raila Odinga’s Death

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga is facing a storm of political and legal troubles following his recent comments about the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Speaking at a burial ceremony in Nyeri, Kahiga allegedly said that Raila’s death was a “blessing” for the Mt Kenya region, sparking national outrage.

According to reports, the governor accused the late Raila of sidelining Central Kenya in development matters after his cooperation with President William Ruto.

These remarks quickly spread online, triggering angry reactions from both opposition and government leaders. The backlash forced Kahiga to resign as vice chair of the Council of Governors (CoG).

However, Kahiga’s troubles may only be beginning. Insiders reveal that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party is considering disciplinary action against him.

As per party regulations, a formal complaint could lead to hearings by the National Disciplinary Tribunal. If found guilty, Kahiga may face penalties ranging from a warning to full expulsion from UDA.

Even so, being expelled from the party would not immediately cost him his governorship since he was directly elected by Nyeri residents. Nonetheless, party pressure could lead to a push for impeachment.

A section of Nyeri’s County Assembly Members, mostly allied to UDA, are reportedly considering tabling an impeachment motion. If the motion passes at the county level and is upheld by the Senate, Kahiga could lose his seat entirely.

Another looming threat comes from the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC). If Kahiga’s remarks are deemed to have incited ethnic hatred or discrimination, he could be summoned for questioning.

Under Kenyan law, such offenses carry penalties of up to Ksh1 million in fines or imprisonment of up to five years.
