The father of former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua, who tragically passed away last week, has shared his son’s final words before his death.
Dedan Kimathi revealed that Kimani, who died on October 15, 2025, committed suicide at a rehabilitation centre after battling severe depression.
In his last message, Kimani reportedly said, “I have chosen to rest in the hands of God.”
Kimathi also shared insights from a brief note left by Kimani, in which the late journalist described his exhaustion from constant mental struggles.
He wrote about feeling worn out despite multiple attempts to treat his condition, stating, “I am tired; I have fought this body for long; it has affected my mind. I have been in treatment, and I am not getting well.”
The note further expressed his desire for peace: “I have done the best in my life, but I want to rest. I have chosen rest, and I have no grudge with anyone.”
Kimathi emphasized that Kimani appeared well and communicated normally in the days before his death.
The family does not blame the rehabilitation centre for the tragedy, acknowledging that it was a self-inflicted death.
In a message to Kenyans, Kimani’s father urged people to seek guidance from God and warned against taking similar drastic steps when facing mental health struggles.
