A terrifying incident unfolded in Nairobi CBD on Monday night, September 13, when a Citi Hoppa bus lost control and overturned, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
The accident occurred near the Serena Hotel at around 11 pm, according to Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria.
The 51-seater bus reportedly overturned, trapping some passengers inside, though the exact number of people on board remains unclear.
The crash caused massive traffic disruption along Kenyatta Avenue, with bystanders and motorists rushing to the scene to assist the victims.
"There has been a serious accident involving a City Hoppa bus near Serena, on the way to the State House. Many people have been injured, and some are trapped under the bus," Mosiria confirmed.
"We are mobilising ambulances to transport the injured to hospitals. Emergency service providers, please respond immediately," he added.
Security and emergency teams from the Nairobi County Government quickly arrived to aid in rescue operations.
Authorities have launched investigations into the cause of the accident, with reckless driving suspected.
Mosiria stressed the need for enforcing traffic laws and reintroducing safety measures such as speed governors and safety belts to prevent future tragedies.
"I call upon the police and relevant authorities to reintroduce the Michuki traffic rules. Safety belts and speed governors must be enforced, along with strict speed limits within cities like Nairobi," Mosiria said.
"We have recently lost lives that could have been saved if drivers had been more careful, including the Waruku accident a few days ago and today’s tragic incident at Valley Road near Serena," he added.
Motorists are urged to remain vigilant, ensure their vehicles are in good condition, and that passengers are securely fastened with seatbelts.
The Nairobi public remains on edge as investigations continue, and authorities vow stricter enforcement to prevent further loss of life on the capital’s roads.
