The High Court has summoned Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga to appear in court over the mysterious disappearance of security analyst Mwenda Mbijiwe, who went missing more than four years ago.
Mwenda, a former Kenya Air Force pilot turned security consultant, vanished on June 12, 2021, while travelling from Nairobi to his home in Meru. His vehicle was later found abandoned near Tatu City in Kiambu County, with no trace of him.
In a ruling delivered on Tuesday, October 14, Justice Martin Muya ordered the two top officials to personally appear in court on Wednesday, October 15, to explain the whereabouts of Mbijiwe and why they have failed to comply with previous court orders directing them to produce him.
“The Inspector General and the DPP must appear before this court and account for the missing person,” ruled Justice Muya.
According to reports, Mbijiwe was last seen in Roysambu, Nairobi, in the company of unidentified individuals driving an unmarked vehicle believed to belong to DCI officers.
At the time of his disappearance, he was facing a court case involving Ksh150,000, allegedly obtained under false pretence after promising to help a man secure a job at the United Nations.
Last month, Lawyer Evans Ondieki, representing Mbijiwe’s family, and Jane Gatwiri M’ithinji, the missing man’s mother, filed a petition at the High Court, demanding accountability from law enforcement agencies.
The petitioners accused police officers of unlawfully arresting and detaining Mbijiwe, claiming it was a direct violation of his constitutional right to freedom.
“Ms. M’ithinji has suffered psychological and emotional torture for the last four years since her son was allegedly abducted by unknown people in Roysambu,” the petition read.
The court also heard that before his disappearance, Mbijiwe had reported receiving death threats at the Central Police Station, raising further suspicion about possible foul play.
The family now hopes that the fresh court summons will finally shed light on what happened to the missing analyst — a case that continues to puzzle both investigators and Kenyans to this day.
