Dedication Beyond Limits: 71-Year-Old Man Walks 11 Days for Mashujaa Day

A 71-year-old man from Nakuru has captured the hearts of many Kenyans after revealing that he trekked for 11 days to attend this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui County.

Stephen Kariuki, the elderly patriot, began his incredible journey on October 9, walking all the way to Ithookwe Stadium—the venue of the national celebrations—where he arrived on October 19, just a day before the event.

Speaking to journalists, Kariuki said walking to attend national holidays had become his personal tradition, and this year marked the eleventh time he had done so.

“I have walked for 11 days. I began the journey on October 9 and arrived here yesterday. I am 71 years old and I was born in 1963 when Kenya attained its independence,” he stated proudly.

Kariuki explained that his motivation came from a deep sense of patriotism and gratitude to Kenya’s freedom fighters.

“I walk to commemorate the brave Kenyans who fought for our country. I love walking—it’s my way of honouring them,” he added.

Over the years, he has trekked to different counties including Nairobi, Kisii, Kakamega, and Kitui, each time carrying the Kenyan flag, a backpack, and his iconic three-legged stool painted in national colours.

During his latest trek, he stopped briefly in Matuu, Machakos County, where he spent the night before continuing his journey.

After the celebrations, Kariuki revealed that he planned to raise funds for his return journey with help from family and friends.

This year’s Mashujaa Day event was attended by President William Ruto, his Senegalese counterpart Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and thousands of Kenyans who filled the stadium to capacity.
