Tensions within Mt Kenya politics have escalated sharply after DCP party official Dr Peter Mbae accused Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga of abandoning former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp and fanning ethnic divisions in the region.
Speaking to supporters, Dr Mbae alleged that Governor Kahiga had long deserted Gachagua’s political side, claiming his recent controversial statements were part of a wider plan to stir animosity among communities for political gain.
The accusations came alongside photos showing Kahiga meeting with Ngunjiri Wambugu, a known critic of Gachagua.
The photos — which have gone viral — have fueled speculation of a possible realignment in Mt Kenya politics.

Dr Mbae’s statement comes amid growing criticism of Kahiga’s earlier remarks on the late Raila Odinga’s death, where he reportedly suggested that Raila’s demise would “benefit the Mt Kenya region.”
Political observers have warned that such rhetoric is dangerous and divisive, particularly during a period of national mourning, saying it risks inflaming ethnic tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting between Kahiga and Wambugu — both seen together in a private setting — raised questions among political watchers who suspect a new anti-Gachagua alliance may be in the making.
Dr Mbae further cautioned that Kahiga’s conduct was a betrayal of Mt Kenya unity, insisting that divisive politics could undermine peace and cohesion in the region.
Analysts believe the DCP official’s remarks reflect the deepening cracks within Mt Kenya’s leadership, as rival factions fight for control and influence in the region.
While Kahiga maintains a strong following at home, accusations of betrayal and ethnic politics could dent his image and isolate him from senior leaders ahead of 2027.
The coming days are expected to be crucial, as reactions from Gachagua and other top Mt Kenya leaders could determine whether Kahiga’s influence wanes — or if he emerges stronger through new alliances.
