Tanzania is facing criticism as the nation heads into its general elections, following disturbing reports of harassment and violence targeting opposition voices.
Father Nikata, a Catholic priest and lecturer at St. Augustine University of Tanzania, went missing in early October 2025. He was later discovered alive in the Ruvuma Region under alarming circumstances.
According to reports, he was abducted, forced to take poison, and dumped in a forest by a special squad allegedly targeting critics of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan took office in March 2021 following the death of former President John Magufuli, becoming Tanzania’s first female president.
As the country approaches the upcoming elections, concerns have grown over the detention and harassment of individuals accused of treason or opposing the government.
The Tanzanian police have denied any involvement in Father Nikata’s disappearance, dismissing claims of abduction and poisoning.
