Governor Gladys Wanga Faces Backlash Over Visit to Raila Odinga’s Family Home

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has sparked widespread criticism after being seen at the late Raila Odinga’s family home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi.

The governor was photographed alongside Royal Media Services Chairman SK Macharia, who was leading a delegation to pay respects.

The images, shared by Citizen TV Kenya, quickly went viral — not for the condolences, but due to a wave of public disapproval.

Many Kenyans flooded the comments section, questioning Wanga’s presence and motives, turning what was meant to be a solemn visit into a public relations challenge.

One user, Lynder Odero, bluntly wrote, “Wanga punguza kiherehere, go back to your house,” a sentiment echoed by numerous others demanding that she leave the Odinga homestead. Comments such as “What is Wanga still doing at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi?” highlighted growing frustration with her presence in Siaya County.

Critics also drew comparisons between Wanga and other controversial figures, labelling her the "female version of Kahiga," in reference to Nyeri Governor who is often seen as polarizing. Some even accused her of exploiting the mourning period for political gain, calling her an “enemy of peace in this country.”

Supporters of the ODM Governor attempted to offer cultural context, noting that it is customary to keep company with the family after a burial, as that is when mourning truly begins.

However, their voices were largely overshadowed by the overwhelmingly negative reactions online.

Despite any cultural justification, Governor Wanga now finds herself at the center of intense public scrutiny, with her visit being perceived as controversial by a significant portion of Kenyans.
