Big Win for Western Kenya as Ruto Extends Nairobi–Mau Summit Road to Kisumu, Eldoret & Busia

President William Ruto has unveiled ambitious plans to extend the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit Highway to more western counties, including Kericho, Kisumu, Eldoret, and Busia, in what he described as a move to boost trade and connectivity across Kenya.

Speaking in Nakuru County during the launch of the Mau Forest Complex Conservation and Livelihood Programme, Ruto said the expansion will ensure the road benefits millions of Kenyans beyond the Rift Valley region.

“Next month, the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit road will begin. I do not want it to end at Mau Summit but to extend to Kericho, Kisumu, Eldoret, and Malaba,” he said.

Ruto defended the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model being used to fund the project, saying it’s the only sustainable way to build large infrastructure without burdening taxpayers.

He revealed plans to create a special Infrastructure Fund to mobilize private capital and urged MPs to fast-track laws supporting Infrastructure Bonds.

The new expressway will feature a four-lane dual carriageway from Nairobi to Naivasha and a six-lane section from Naivasha to Nakuru — designed to ease traffic congestion and cut travel time.

However, some motorists have raised concerns over possible toll fees, warning that it could increase transport costs.

Despite that, Ruto insisted the project will transform transport, spur business, and connect Kenya’s major economic hubs.
