Siaya County Governor James Orengo has strongly condemned the Kenyan government for its move to charge popular activist Boniface Mwangi with terrorism. Speaking on Sunday, July 20, 2025, Orengo described the charges as baseless and politically motivated.

“It’s outrageous to accuse Boniface Mwangi and our politically conscious youth of terrorism,” Orengo stated via his verified social media accounts. The governor argued that using such serious accusations to silence activists is unjust and dangerous.

Boniface Mwangi Arrest and Terrorism Allegations

Mwangi was arrested on Saturday, July 19, at his residence in Lukenya, Machakos County. According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mwangi is accused of being involved in organizing terrorist activities during the June 25, 2025, anti-government protests.

However, Governor Orengo, who is also a seasoned lawyer, refuted the state’s move, saying peaceful demonstrations and political speech should never be classified as terrorism. “Protected speech and political expression should not be criminalized,” he emphasized.

DCI Claims and Legal Team Response

The DCI claimed they recovered two unused tear gas canisters and a 7.62mm blank round from Mwangi’s home. Mwangi’s legal team has denied the allegations, accusing the authorities of planting evidence to justify the terrorism charges.

Crackdown on Protesters and Political Activists

The arrest comes as the Kenyan government intensifies its crackdown on individuals believed to be behind recent unrest. Earlier this week, eight suspects were also charged with terrorism for allegedly burning down Mawego Police Station during the same wave of protests. Their case will be heard again on July 22, 2025.

Human rights groups and civil society organizations have spoken out, demanding Boniface Mwangi's immediate release and calling the charges a violation of his rights.

Mwangi is expected to appear in court on Monday, July 21, where the formal terrorism charges will be read.
