Police Officer Kills His Boss, Shot Dead by Colleagues in Siaya

A tragic incident happened early Sunday morning at Ng’iya Police Post in Siaya County where two police officers lost their lives after a deadly shooting.

The area police boss, Charles Wafula, said that the shooting happened around 6 a.m. Constable Martin Mwendwa is reported to have picked up a G3 rifle, gone into the home of Corporal Chesise—his boss—and shot him in the chest and arms, killing him on the spot.

After the shooting, Mwendwa tried to run away and headed towards Ng’iya Girls’ High School. But before he could escape, other officers caught up with him and shot him dead in a shootout.

Police are still trying to find out what led to the attack. Wafula said they are checking if the two had a personal disagreement or if the constable had a mental health problem.

It’s also reported that before he was killed, Mwendwa fired shots in the air to try and scare off the officers chasing him.

The bodies of the two officers were taken to Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem exams as investigations continue.

This case adds to growing concerns about the mental well-being of police officers.

Earlier this year in February, a similar case happened in Nairobi. One police officer shot and killed his colleague in Ruaraka after they left a club together. The two had an argument, and the officer opened fire, killing his fellow officer, who was with his brother at the time.

Another case was reported on March 9 at Gigiri Police Station. A drunk officer reportedly shot at his colleagues in the station’s canteen, killing one and injuring another.
