In a dramatic twist just hours before the highly anticipated June 25 protests, top opposition figures including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and even former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have come out guns blazing—rubbishing viral claims that they’ve called off the protests due to security threats.
This firestorm erupted after a sensational post made rounds online, falsely suggesting that the opposition had urged Gen Z and Kenyans at large to cancel the demonstrations over fears that hired goons were planning to unleash chaos. The post painted a grim picture, alleging that hundreds of criminals from Kibera, Mathare, Korogocho, and even North Rift were being recruited, armed, and prepped in Nakuru forests—with each allegedly promised a Ksh5,000 payout.
But Kalonzo's Wiper Party didn't let the lies fly for long.
In a hard-hitting statement on Tuesday, the party flagged the viral post as fake, accusing pro-government bloggers of masterminding the fake scare in a desperate attempt to sow confusion and scare protesters into silence.
“Don’t be fooled,” Kalonzo roared in a press statement. “This dirty propaganda isn’t just false—it’s dangerous. The fake news peddlers wanted to paralyze the people’s movement. But all they’ve done is fire us up even more. We’re not backing down.”
Kalonzo further emphasized that the opposition leaders are united and will be marching shoulder-to-shoulder with the people in today’s protests to honour those who lost their lives in last year’s demonstrations. “Tomorrow we walk, peacefully—but boldly—for the heroes who paid the ultimate price,” he declared.
Today’s protests mark one year since the tragic anti-government demos that claimed the lives of dozens of young Kenyans. Protesters across the nation are expected to march in solidarity, rejecting fear tactics and standing strong in their call for justice and change.
