On Saturday, there was a big relief for many Kenyans who had been arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for allegedly causing violence during the June 25 protests.
New information has now come out clearly showing that most of those arrested were not the real troublemakers. In fact, some of them did not even participate in the protests at all.
Speaking through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, well-known activist Hussein Khalid said that many of the arrested individuals are respected activists. He strongly denied claims that they were among the goons who were seen looting shops or attacking people during the protests.
“The people they have arrested are not criminals,” Khalid said. “They are peaceful protesters and human rights defenders.”
He went on to criticize the DCI for failing to use the clear evidence that is already available.
“CCTV cameras and many online videos captured the faces of the real goons,” Khalid added. He explained that the violent groups were clearly seen moving around different parts of Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), looting shops and even destroying public property in Kiambu County.
The activist urged the DCI to act wisely and stop targeting innocent people.
“It’s very wrong to arrest peaceful protesters while leaving out the real criminals who were seen causing chaos,” he said. Khalid called on the police to carry out proper investigations and use the video evidence to bring the actual suspects to justice.
