Atwoli Says Leaders Are to Blame for Gen Z Protests, Points Finger at Gachagua

COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has blamed some political leaders for encouraging Gen Z youth to protest and damage property in different parts of the country.

While speaking at a church fundraiser in Butula Constituency, Busia County, Atwoli said Kenya should not end up like countries such as Somalia and Sudan, where protests led to serious chaos. He strongly criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying he has been fueling the tension and that Kenyans will eventually hold him responsible.

Atwoli called on the government to act quickly and bring things under control, saying the unrest is scaring away investors and affecting women and children the most.

Butula MP Joseph Oyula, who was also at the event, supported Atwoli’s message and asked the youth to stay calm and peaceful.

Meanwhile, Gachagua defended himself, saying it's the government that should take the blame for last week's nationwide protests against the Finance Bill 2024. Speaking at a church service in Nyahururu, he said the government is wrongly accusing him and the opposition for the chaos.

Gachagua claimed that many of the violent acts and looting were carried out by hired thugs, and hinted that some government officials may have been behind it.
