“I Should Have Trusted Uhuru”: Gachagua Says Ruto Lied to Him

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now says he regrets ending his friendship with former President Uhuru Kenyatta. He said that if he had listened to Uhuru, he wouldn’t be in the difficult political situation he is in today.

Speaking during an interview on the Obina Show, Gachagua opened up about how close he and Uhuru used to be. He described Uhuru as a friend and even called him a “brother.” Gachagua said between 2013 and 2017, their friendship was very strong — they would visit each other, talk often, and shared many good times.

But things changed when William Ruto got involved. Gachagua said Ruto came between him and Uhuru and caused their friendship to break. He admitted he made a big mistake by allowing Ruto to ruin their relationship.

“Uhuru was always good to me,” Gachagua said. “We had a very close friendship. I now regret letting Ruto come between us. That was my biggest mistake.”

He also revealed that it was actually Uhuru who introduced him to Ruto in the first place. But when Uhuru later changed his mind and didn’t support Ruto for the presidency, Gachagua sided with Ruto instead. He said he thought Uhuru was being unfair at the time, but now sees things differently.

“I believed Ruto when he told me Uhuru was the bad guy. I thought Uhuru just didn’t want Ruto to be president. But I now see I was wrong. Uhuru was right. I made a poor decision,” he confessed.

Even though Gachagua had publicly criticized Uhuru in the past, his tone has now changed. He spoke very respectfully about the retired president, praising his leadership and wisdom.

“I admire his leadership. I really respect him as an elder and a statesman. I hope he enjoys his retirement in peace. When people attack him without reason, I always try to defend him,” Gachagua added.
