Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has urged leaders and residents in the Nyanza region to unite and honor the legacy of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking during a church service in Homa Bay County, Matiang’i described Raila as a visionary leader who valued inclusion, dialogue, and collective responsibility, urging the community to uphold these principles as a tribute to his enduring influence.
The former CS, who has shown increased political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, highlighted that Raila’s leadership transcended ethnic boundaries and fostered a sense of national cohesion.
He reminded Nyanza residents that Raila championed fairness, justice, and empowerment, particularly for marginalized communities, and that these ideals should guide the region’s next generation of leaders.
Matiang’i recounted his collaboration with Raila during the handshake era with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, emphasizing how their partnership brought peace and stability to the country.
He also shared that even after leaving government, he often sought Raila’s advice, describing him as a mentor who believed in inclusivity and dialogue.
During the service, Matiang’i called on residents of Kisii, Nyamira, Kisumu, and Homa Bay counties to avoid divisive politics, warning that disunity could undermine the region’s achievements and weaken its voice nationally.
His remarks come amid internal disagreements within ODM following Raila’s death, with leaders expressing differing views on the party’s future direction and potential alignment with President William Ruto’s administration.
At Raila’s state funeral in Bondo on October 19, President Ruto pledged to safeguard ODM from political manipulation and assured mourners that his government would collaborate with party members to continue Raila’s vision of inclusivity and development.
