The Last Mile: Chronology Of Raila's Journey From India To His Final Resting Place

Kenya is preparing to bid farewell to one of its most iconic leaders, Raila Amolo Odinga, whose death in India has left the nation in deep mourning.

The former Prime Minister passed away on Wednesday, October 15, while receiving treatment in Kerala, India.

According to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, a detailed plan has been drawn up to ensure Raila’s final journey is conducted with full state honors and respect.

President William Ruto has declared seven days of national mourning, during which the national flag will fly at half-mast across all public offices, military bases, and Kenyan embassies abroad.

A national funeral committee has been formed to coordinate all burial plans. It is co-chaired by Deputy President Kindiki and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother.

The committee includes members of Raila’s family, Cabinet secretaries, ODM leaders, and governors from across the country such as James Orengo, Anyang’ Nyong’o, Gladys Wanga, and Abdulswamad Nassir.

A special delegation consisting of government officials, ODM leaders, and close family members left for India to bring home Raila’s body. The plane carrying his remains is expected to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) early Thursday morning.

It will then be taken to Lee Funeral Home before being moved to Parliament Buildings for public viewing, giving Kenyans a chance to pay their last respects.

On Friday, a state funeral service will take place at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi. The ceremony will begin at 8am and will be attended by international guests, political leaders, and thousands of Kenyans.

After the service, Raila’s body will be moved to his Karen home for an overnight vigil. On Saturday, the casket will be flown to Kisumu for public viewing at Moi Stadium, then driven to his home in Bondo, Siaya County.

Finally, on Sunday, the nation will lay to rest a man who defined Kenyan politics for decades. The burial will follow Anglican Church traditions, marking the end of an era for the Odinga family and the country at large.
