Siaya Governor James Orengo stirred emotions in Bondo on Sunday after making a bold statement seen as an indirect attack on President William Ruto during the final journey of the late Raila Odinga.
Speaking before thousands of mourners gathered at Opoda Farm, Orengo said it was ironic that some of those who once opposed Raila’s push for Kenya’s new constitution in 2010 were now among those mourning him.
“Hata wale walipinga hii katiba mpya ya Raila wako hapa leo!” Orengo declared, sparking cheers and laughter from the crowd.
The governor, known for his fearless and fiery speeches, praised Raila as a visionary leader who sacrificed everything for democracy and justice.
“Raila gave us this Constitution, he gave us freedom, and he gave Kenya a new direction,” Orengo said, his voice breaking with emotion.
He urged leaders to emulate Raila’s selfless service to the nation, warning against political hypocrisy.
“You cannot fight a man all his life and come to celebrate him only in death. Let us live by his values, not just praise him today,” he added.
Orengo’s remarks, which came as President Ruto and other top leaders watched in silence, sent murmurs across the crowd — with many interpreting them as a veiled attack on the head of state.
The emotional tribute highlighted the deep political undertones surrounding Raila’s funeral, which drew national and international attention.
As the crowd chanted Raila’s name, many agreed that his passing marked the end of an era — but also a renewed call to uphold the democratic ideals he fought for throughout his life.
